St. George’s day rally at Cambridge City Football Club.
OWL was very grateful to receive a cheque for £1248.30 from the Cambridge Scooter Club, this being in addition to the £1512.66 previously raised by the club for OWL over the last few years. Over 200 scooters took part in a rally and ride out through the streets of Cambridge. Owl café staff and volunteers sold burgers/hot dogs/ hot drinks and cakes, the burgers and hot dogs were donated by a very generous local organisation. Cambridge Scooter Club sold raffle tickets and patches. A great day was had by all with music from the era being played in the supporters bar.
- OWL is flying high!
Within the last week OWL haswon two prestigious awards. First it was Social Enterprise East of England’s (SEEE) annual Photographic Competition. Out of 50 entrants OWL won first prize. The results were announced at SEEE’s Black and White Gala Dinner at the Belfry in Cambourne on Social Enterprise Day. It is the second time in 3 years that OWL has won. All the staff and trainees were delighted, especially as the prize was a lovely digital camera and printer.
Then on Tuesday at the national Enterprising Women’s Awards ceremony Gill Riley, OWL’s Chief Executive, was voted winner of the 2009 Social Enterprise category award. This was a complete surprise as she hadn’t even known she had been nominated until Cambridge based Enterprising Women phoned to tell her she had been short listed. Then when she was announced the winner in her category she was over the moon and couldn’t wait to go back and share her accolade with whole team.
“I was taken aback and absolutely delighted. I rushed back to the office to show the team as we’re all involved. It’s a big boost for the team and business.”
Gill has worked for the charity for nine years and has helped it grow from very modest beginnings to becoming a significant charity based in Sawston. It now runs two successful social enterprises – OWL Café and OWL Bikes which provide training and work experience opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and other disadvantaged groups as well as wonderful food and refurbished bicycles.
The whole team are smiling – it was just what was needed to lift their spirits before the headlong rush to Christmas.
